The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC ) funds UK and international science and manages large scale UK research facilities across a vast array of scientific disciplines. STFC’s Scientific Computing Department provides large scale high performance computing (HPC) facilities, computing and data management services and infrastructure for national and international research projects. The STFC Hartree Centre maximises on this world-leading infrastructure and expertise by accelerating the adoption of HPC, data analytics and cognitive technologies into UK industry.
Scientific Computing Department

Scientific computing is fundamental to modern research. This broad and rapidly-advancing field involves exploiting advanced computing capabilities to understand and solve complex problems in science.

Compute and visualisation in SCD

The huge amounts of data generated by scientific research require advanced computing infrastructure, products and services. Scientists need these resources to interpret and manage the information they obtain during their research, and it is these resources that the Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides.

SCD manages high performance computing facilities, services and infrastructure, supporting some of UK’s most advanced scientific facilities. Our staff, which is made up of approximately 160 computing experts, offer services and products that help the scientific community to make vital discoveries and deliver progress.

We are leaders in the advancement and support of scientific computing, carrying out research and development to gather and interpret results quickly and clearly. Whether it’s creating new computational science software, helping to visualize complex scientific results, or developing the infrastructure that allows us to process huge amounts of data, R&D from SCD is driving improvements across the scientific research landscape. In addition to our wider R&D activities, we are also trouble-shooters and problem-solvers, providing day-to-day products and services that help meet scientific needs. This includes hardware – both computational and storage facilities – as well as data management, networks, software, skilled people and expertise, policies and all of the other behind-the-scenes components vital to scientific investigation.

SCD provides services and infrastructure for the UK Science & Technology Facilities Council: the non-departmental government body behind much of the nation’s cutting-edge research. We work across a number of large facilities at both the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. We also have close links with other computing centres around the UK, including the Hartree Centre at Daresbury.
